Ok, at first this might not seem like an advanced_knit question, ( but after turning this over in my mind, I think i need more help than  )

Another way you could look at it is to knit both socks at the same time, on two sets of needles. It sounds like one is going to be narrower than the other, but not shorter, so you can make adjustments to the striping as you go.
