Title: Ghosts
Pairings: MinKey, OnTae, (friendly) JongKey
Description: Where Minho and Jonghyun are ghosts, and Key’s younger vampire brother Taemin is in love with his best friend Onew.
Taemin had taken the liberty of exploring their area during the night while Key was imagining shadows in his room, and rambled on and on about the various sky scrapers and clubs he’d noticed on a Saturday night over breakfast. Key wasn’t really interested in any of that, other than the mega mall the kid mentioned just five minutes away from their flat, so he just nodded his way through the recount while guzzling black coffee.
Key abruptly stood up, making Taemin halt in midsentence, and cheerfully made an announcement.
“We’re going to school on Monday!” Taemin’s jaw dropped for the second time in 3 days, and immediately started to protest.
“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! SCHOOL?? Have you forgotten what happened the last time we went to school?” Key did, actually. Taemin had charmed his way out of doing a single bit of work and somehow managed to place third in school despite the fact that his exam scripts were blank, while Key had ticked off half a dozen ghosts in the school (it was a Catholic school) and caused a whole block of classrooms to collapse in his ‘epic battle’. Of course, they were expelled to the extreme dismay of the entire female population in the school, barely within a week.
“Well, this time it’ll be different. I did some research with new types of makeup, and this time, you’re not going to be so pretty. And it’s a brand new school, so there won’t be any ghosts around.” Or at least there shouldn’t.
Taemin positively slumped in his chair and groaned. This was going to be a disaster.
They spent the rest of the day organising their house, with Key doing the nagging and Taemin doing the actual work, the latter taking every chance to whine.
“Why didn’t mom make you into a werewolf, then you’d be able to actually do something other than stand there and wave your hands about.” The vampire grunted as he balanced their sofa in one hand and the TV in the other.
“What do you think this family is, part of the Twilight saga? If I were a werewolf you’d be eating raw meat every day and there’d be hairballs all over the house!”
“That doesn’t stop you from drooling at cousin Hara’s friend Nicole every family gathering, she’s a werewolf too.” Key flung his Home Décor magazine at the boy before jumping on him and tickling him, making the vampire scream like a demented banshee.
Taemin was sitting on Key’s head threatening to yank his hair out when they suddenly heard a knock on the door. Instantly, Taemin flew about the house trying to hide the mess of smashed furniture and dents in the wall, while Key checked his reflection in the window pane. The knocks got steadily louder and they heard a muffled voice through the door.
“Uh…is everything alright in there? Hello? Is anyone in?” With a final glance around the house, Key yanked open the door to reveal a sheepish looking guy with acorn brown hair and thick black frames that had slid halfway down his nose. He was wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt, something that Key would have absolutely disapproved of, but somehow this guy made it work.
“Um…hi, I was just wondering…”
“Yeah everything’s fine; do you want to come in?” Taemin poked his head around Key’s waist and grabbed the stranger’s wrist with a pale hand, dragging him in before he could reply.
“Sit!” Taemin shoved the stunned guy towards their sofa before darting over and plonking down next to him. “I’m Taemin, what’s your name?” Key rolled his eyes and went to the kitchen to start preparing drinks, used to the kid’s crazy over-friendly antics. There wasn’t anyone who could refuse Taemin, other than Key, and it only took five seconds for him to wrap any person around his fair pinkie.
“I’m Lee Onew, but I don’t think I’ll sit, thanks.” Key raised an eyebrow at this, most people rushed to do whatever Taemin asked, even without him using the Powers.
“Why not…? Please sit…” Key could hear Taemin lacing his words with the Powers, which made every syllable sound like angels singing, and compelled anyone to do exactly as he asked. Combined with his killer pout and trembling puppy eyes, even Key had trouble saying no to his whims sometimes. However, Onew shocked them again.
“No, I said I don’t want to, I’m sure you have things to do…unpacking things…” Onew started firmly, but ended off mumbling as he made his way to the door. I need to check this guy out. Key stepped out from the kitchen with the tray of drinks, cheerfully calling out to him.
“Oh but I made iced coffee, it’s my specialty, are you sure you won’t stay for a while?” Key could be as enticing as Taemin when he wanted to, and he was certainly laying on the sugar coating, but the only reply he got was the door closing. Taemin zipped over to his side and grabbed his bottle of banana milk, pouting as he nibbled on the straw.
“That guy’s weird, Key.”
“I know.”
That night, as Key was preparing for bed, he heard a soft cough from his doorway. Assuming it was Taemin wanting to sleep in his bed again, he ignored it. However the cough was repeated, and Key turned around in annoyance ready to tell the brat that he had his own room for a reason. However, it wasn’t Taemin standing in the doorway; it was a tall guy with jet black hair that was cropped short, in a pair of skinny jeans and a pullover. He was leaning against the door frame with his arms folded across his broad chest, a slight frown on his face.
Key took a tentative step towards him, but then he disappeared. So much for no ghosts in new buildings Key thought to himself as he shook his head and went to bed.
Finally Monday came, and a sleeping Taemin was dumped into the car by Key at 8 in the morning. The elder had instructed their driver to drop them a block away from school, since they didn’t want to attract too much attention to themselves, at least as long as they could avoid it. Of course, that was all wishful thinking on his part.
The moment a sleepy Taemin stumbled out of the car with Key by his side, the entire street of students heading to the high school fell silent and started to stare. Who was that gorgeous kid with the pure flawless skin, soft blonde hair and kissable lips? And who was his companion, with half his head shaved off, smartly dressed in black skinnies and a designer t-shirt?
The whole street was buzzing about them before they’d even taken five steps, and the moment they stepped through the school gates they were mobbed by a whole crowd of girls introducing themselves. Key sighed and slipped on his Dior shades, while Taemin just shuffled along beside his brother, still too asleep to socialize.
It took the kid at least two hours to be responsive to any kind of stimuli, and he’d only been dragged out of bed an hour ago. Key had brushed his teeth, dressed and fed the boy without him even opening his eyes. Taemin would probably complain about the missed opportunity to get to know everyone, whining at Key for not waking him up properly, but he would live though it.
When they went to the office to get their schedules, they were tailed by at least 10 girls and 3 guys, and the secretary was so stunned it took her twenty minutes just to get their names. Key was used to this, since it happened wherever they went, but he was really expecting the city people to have more class than this. The moment the flustered secretary handed over their schedules, he thanked her with a nod and turned to leave, but out of the corner of his eye caught a flash of very familiar acorn brown hair.
“Come on Taemin. Let’s go find out more about that weird guy.” He grabbed the kid who was dozing on his feet by the wrist and dragged him out of the office after Onew, making their entourage scatter in surprise.
“Hey, you! Lee Onew!” Key yelled across the hallway. Onew tripped and stumbled into a row of lockers, but hurried on as if he didn’t hear the voice that echoed off the walls. Grabbing the arm of the nearest girl, making her squeal in joy, Key demanded information.
“Who is Lee Onew?”
“Oh, just some second year guy. He’s quite the klutz, you’ll be much better off hanging out with us.” She gushed and flipped her sandy blonde hair over her shoulder, fluttering her obviously fake eyelashes at him. Key scoffed and released her arm.
“Did I ask about you? No.” he replied his own question before she could fill those baby blue eyes with tears as fake as her nose. “Bye.” He waved his fingers in her face before strutting off, pulling Taemin after him.
By lunchtime Taemin had definitely woken up, and was happily taking care of the throngs of girls that followed them around, while Key scavenged for information on Onew. All he’d been able to find out so far was that he wasn’t very noticed by people, except when he rolled down flights of stairs or walked into trees.
“Key~” Taemin slipped his pale arms around Key’s neck, making the girls gasp and squeal. “There’s a party tonight….a party, Key.” he emphasised again.
“No, we’re not going.” Taemin pouted and frowned at his brother, who was still absorbed in his stupid fashion design book.
“You’re no fun.” He slammed shut the book, and glared adorably at his brother, making the girls swoon.
“Thanks.” Key didn’t even glance up, and opened the book again. Then Taemin had a brainwave. After whispering something to some of the girls and sending them running, he turned back to his brother with a triumphant look in his gaze.
“Onew’s going.” Finally, this caught Key’s attention and he looked up at the kid grinning like he’d won a lifetime supply of chocolate, which to him was probably the same as going to this mindless party, so the elder nodded. Taemin’s eyes widened with his mouth, and he clapped his hands laughing with the thrill of a party.
The party started at 7, which meant they could only arrive at 9 or later, so while Key redid his makeup for the fifth time Taemin paced up and down in their flat running his fingers through his hair. The vampire had flown home after school ended in his excitement, making sure to stay out of sight of any humans, leaving Key to make his own way home in the car.
“Will you stop pacing; you’re making me giddy, and wasting my efforts to make your hair perfect.” Key rolled his eyes at the keyed up 17 year old, who flopped onto the couch in despair, staring out the window in boredom. Suddenly he jumped up and stared at the street below.
“It’s Onew!” With just those two words, he had Key next to him pressing his face to the glass. And so it was, the guy was in brown skinnies and a light yellow dress shirt, again an outfit Key would have scoffed at, but couldn’t help ogling at on him. The duo watched with their mouths agape as the guy hailed a cab and sped off into the night. Then they started running for the door.
Within two seconds, the boys were piling into the car and Key frantically telling the driver to head for the party like his life depended on it. They screeched to a halt outside the house in five minutes, with the pounding music shook the ground beneath them, and the front lawn thronged with people. Taemin pressed his hands over his ears and winced, cursing his extra sensitive hearing, but Key didn’t even notice. He was already drifting towards the house like a moth drawn to a lamp.
As it was in school, before he’d even taken five steps up the driveway he was blocked by three girls in ridiculously short skirts holding out a drink for him. However, it just took a glare from him to make them scamper over to Taemin who was already revelling in the spotlight, with his wide open arms just waiting for the girls. Key was here on a mission tonight, to get Lee Onew. He was different, and this intrigued Key, and hence he’d become Key’s new obsession.
Key rarely let his attention be so captivated by things, especially people, who were deathly boring and predictable. But when he did choose to focus on something, he wouldn’t rest until he’d achieved what he set out to do, even if it entirely consumed him. After all, he talked to dead people, had a vampire baby brother, and a whole arsenal of witches and nightmarish creatures as relatives, what else could be worse?
