I had never heard of Christiania until I heard Anna's relatives told me to avoid it (they oppose its existence, but also oppose taking steps to abolish it...a very Danish way of seeing the situation)...so it took a few conversations with residents to get a better idea of what Christiania is really about.

I liked the place, generally speaking. The people were much more open and friendly than the rest of Denmark, and even though I don't completely agree with Christiania's founding principles, I think its terrific that its there for those who ascribe to its virtues. There's no way to join a commune in the US without cutting oneself off from society, so having a commune like this that intergrates and interacts with the rest of Denmark is very exciting to see.

That said, Christiania has some serious problems: most pressingly, the whole place is crumbling to pieces and there's no economy to replace or maintain things, so many of the residences are at the point of being physically dangerous to live in.
