it was a fairly impressive successful attitiude-change ratio for a character.
I've noticed that a lot in Mike's writing. To my dismay.
This Corran still makes me twitch a lot.
On the other hand, TYCHO!
Also? When this book came out, I had no idea it was coming. It was on one of those stand-alone cardboard-box displays at Waldenbooks. I walked by in the mall, saw it, gasped mightily, and made with the grabby hands. It was like they wrote a book JUST FOR ME!
By the time I got to this book they had all been published and they were well into the beginnings of the NJO, so it was my way to crack into a vast and seemingly complicated EU as well as a research tool.
I, too, was both gobsmacked and thrilled when I found they were publishing a book starring Wedge. I actually wrote to Bantam a couple of years earlier, proposing a book about Wedge: sadly my experience writing a couple of westerns wasn't what they wanted, but maybe I sparked off an idea

Apologies for the ASSCAPS, but I never realised (beyond the arrogance) the real reason for not much liking Corran in the X-wing books--I wanted more WEDGE. You are wise!
Someone should write an alt-POV fic about what was going on in Wedge's head when they randomly came upon the Skate (of all ships!) like that...
See, I never had this problem as I didn't know what to expect! The Awesomeness of Wedge was unknown to me outside of the fact that he was the only non-main character to survive all three Movies!!! I hated Corran for totally different reasons. It's only now that I wish there'd been more Wedge.
lol, yes! They just need to do an alt-POV for ALL the scenes that aren't Wedge's. It would be awesome.
I was considering buying this the other day - most of my EU stuff (film novels not included) has been pre empire era and I love banter, so this was recommended. I'm definitely thinking about it now.
I think that Corran Horn grated on me from page one because our introduction to him is of him comparing himself to Luke! 1) If he means to compare himself to the best X-wing pilot (at the time), I think it's fair to say that he should be comparing himself, and I think we can all agree on this, to Wedge. Not only is Luke beloved by all, (again I think we all agree) but his flying skills (and in no way do I mean to diminish them) are augmented by the Force, whereas Wedge is just superbly talented and skilled. (Corran even says as much himself in the middle of the chapter when he surmises that the TIE pilot was Wedge because Wedge is the only pilot who "could have stayed with him".) 2) His immediate admission that he wants to be compared to Luke, followed by his self-correction (which happens many times) comes off as self-serving and holier-than-thou. Corran's arrogance and humility is just too much for us to believe right off the get go. If Stackpole's intent was for us to view Corran as a flawed hero (what with his huge ego -

I think part of what threw me, and antagonized me, is that from reading the blurb on the back, this is a book about Wedge. He's the only character named there - it's pitched as a book about Wedge and Rogue Squadron. So to suddenly be confronted with someone else altogether, and someone with an ego a mile wide at that, was just not what I'd been expecting

Yes! Tycho more than makes up for Corran.

It would have been so lovely to not have to wait between X-wing books!
