Enjoyed the fic, especially the transposition into adult!Anakin. Two nitpicks:
a) The Death Star was built without defenses for one man fighters because they didn't consider one-man fighters a threat. After all, it took the son of the one of the most powerful Jedi who ever lived to get the shot right, no?
Plus that's why they had TIE fighters stationed there.
And how/when did Vader get a secret compartment built just for Obi-Wan's lightsaber? Sure, he's a Dark Swiss-Army Knife of the Sith, but still.
a) Yes, I know, but that doesn't mean Anakin didn't say something about it. I mean, the Jedi never listened to him. Now that the Emperor has him where he wants him, I don't think he's going to listen to Anakin either. Anakin's been a pawn to everyone. Anakin's a good strategist because he thinks ahead (if only he used that brain power for his personal life). He likely mentioned to Tarken or Palpatine that there was a hole in the Death Star's defences, and they likely brushed him off.
b) How does Vader get Obi-Wan's lightsabre off the Death Star on his person without there being two lightsabres clipped to his belt? His legs are artificial. There could be space in there for anything. You never know.
Fascinating dream sequence, full of references. :)
And Vader's thoughts about the dream once again show that he just doesn't get it. :( It's true, at some point, at least for a little bit, one has to stop being angry about something and move on to a place where one can try and do something about it. Vader thinks he has moved on, but he hasn't. :(
And I have yet to understand why he thinks he needs to share power with someone, be it Padme or Luke.
Good writing, all in all. Look forward to more from your pen. :)
If Anakin did "get it," those two plus decades of pain and sorrow wouldn't have happened. But of course, we know that.
I agree with some memes I've read that talk about how being a slave as a child has given him this push-pull problem with power. As a slave, he desperately wants a great deal of power. Once he has it, he doesn't have a clue what to do with it. As a slave and then a Jedi Padawan, he's never been in the position of power, thus he would rather someone he trusts to wield it instead.
I like the story. I find it interesting that you have Vader figuring out that the pilot who destroyed the Death Star is his son so soon, and long before he hears Luke's name.
The DVD remaster makes it sound like Vader was totally clueless.
I still think Vader was just playing along. I don't think the changes to the DVD rule it out. After all, the ESB opening crawl says Vader is specifically searching for Luke Skywalker, and Vader later says he is sure Skywalker is with the Rebels on Hoth -- and that's before he talks to Palpatine.
Hi, here from J N retro. Excellent dream sequence, particularly Obi-Wan's smugness and Padme's taunting. Surely she can be allowed some orneriness to the one who killed her! And the notion of secret compartments in the suit, neat. I can see him modifying it all to pieces, little by little, some compartments here, a built-in blaster there ...
