Do any other East coast kids get a homesick feeling when you're away and pass by the seafood section in the supermarket ( Read more... )

i could not relate more. holy crap.

the worst is when i go to my parents and mom is doing a traditional newfie cooked dinner. even though i don't eat it, it's the smell that brings me right back.

but the smell of fish--especially drying fish--is what reminds me of home the most. summers spent at my grandmother's house when my grandfather caught a spread of capelin and had them drying on handmade racks in the back yard just up from the beach. it's such a gross but homey smell.

sigh. i'm going home this summer because being in the middle of the prairie/mountains is really starting to take its toll. yikes!

Gross but homey! You said it!

The only time I get to smell cooking fish is when I'm visiting my mum. I used to protest so much when she'd cook it because I said it was gross and the smell clings to everything for so long (it does!), but now I kind of secretly like it because it's a total olfactory signal of "you're home!". I'm very glad I'm not the only one who doesn't eat fish but still feels like that!

It's funny how much we can miss a certain type of scenery. It seems that people from the East coast seem to very strong "pull" towards the ocean and water, even compared to people who grow up near water elsewhere. Maybe that's a product of Atlantic Canadians also being so incredibly friendly and wonderful in combination with the lovely backdrop. Who knows?

Awww! The idea of feeding little individual fishies to a cat is the most delightful idea to me! It reminds me of when you go to Sea World and get to feed the sea lions the little trays of fish! I want a cat that will do tricks like the sea lions when I provide a fish! There are so many vegan faux-pas' in this paragraph. Whoops! Sorry fishies and marine animals at Sea World and kitties ( ... )

mind you, im just glad to live on a COAST. im glad to get to know the west coast, also... its amazing.I'm totally with you on that! You're very lucky becuase you get to benefit from lovely weather all year AND a coast! I've never been to the Canadian west coast but every time I go to San Francisco I have to be practically torn away and shoved into the plane to come back! I'm afraid to ever go alone because I don't think that I would come back ( ... )

I lovelovelove New Waterford Girl! Sometimes I randomly think of "you know what, Mooney Pottie, lots of cool girls from Sydney and Glace Bay and up the reserve, they call me up all the time!" and start giggling to myself. My grandmother's house near New Glasgow is really close to the Pictou Landing Reserve, and if I had a nickel for every time I heard someone say "up the reserve", I would have a whole lot of nickels!

I too find Maritime accents totally comforting, and it's funny because not many people I grew up with had one. But now they fill me with such joy! Mary Walsh is a great one. I love her book show (the name is escaping me) because there'so much talking!

I fear that I've completely lost my chitchat ability, but I'm confident that if I lived at home for a month or two, it would probably come back. I think it's in the water!

AND YOU MISS MINI SIPS!

I totally miss Sobeys! I didn't know that they existed outside of the Maritimes, so once when I was in Toronto and saw someone carrying a plastic Sobeys bag I was all "HOLY SHIT! THAT PERSON BROUGHT A SOBEYS BAG ALL THE WAY FROM NOVA SCOTIA OR SOMETHING". And then I was informed that Sobeys is all over the place there. Sigh. Apparently there is one in Kanata too? I want to go! Except there's no way I'm going to Kanata ever, but, a girl can dream!

I'd never noticed that before but you're so right! That's such a Maritime-ism and I hadn't even noticed it! I've noticed that they tend to say "The Wal-Mart" and "The Superstore", but this cute little foible escaped my scrutiny! I'm also fairly certain that I'm guilty of having called them "plastic Sobeys bags" when I lived there, but I instinctively stopped when I moved!

Well, the skating/beavertails would be pretty early and the creme egg / crafting would be immediately after. You could certainly be done in time to have dinner with your dad! I'll let you know about times once I get in touch with Dom / Tasha, who appear to be hiding :(
