Some of my most vivid early childhood memories are of sobeys, the mic mac mall(in dartmouth)and of my nanny cutting up cooked lobster and giving me little bites from the kitchen counter.
ONE MORE THING I FORGOT. The smell of salt that you get when you're driving to the beach and you get about 20 minutes away. Sometimes I smell that smell in ontario and it's caused by gross smog or whatever, but I could close my eyes and believe I was close to the ocean again.
I love salty smells, and know exactly the smell you're talking about! It also seems to coincide with the time you start to dry off and you realize that you have tons of sand wedged inside your bathing suit. Teehee! That's one thing about the beach that I DON'T miss
( ... )
If you also imagine me tugging on my nanny's apron you would have an acurate picture! The orange and green sobeys colours are such a memory trigger. When I moved here I always wondered why we never went to sobeys anymore.
woah, im on a cash register computer at my work right now. im a rebel are you going skating tonight?? i want to go skating soo badly! even if you're not going tonight, we should go sooooooon xo
PS! If anyone wants to accompany lovely girls on a skating / beavertails / tea adventure, or a later vegan creme egg making and crafternoon, say the word! Aforementioned lovely girls, let me know what time is convenient!
Sigh. See? THIS is why I made that I LOVE OTTAWA KIDS post!
Aww! I wish you were an Ottawa kid and could come too!
So you love us because we have such fun outings? Lately they have been too few and far between, but when they do happen we have a knack for cramming many wonderful things into our limited blocks of free time. Most of those things usually revolve around food, as you can see. We're efficient!
And I still think it's so funny that you love Ottawa kids so much becuase I've always secretly been all, "I LOVE CALGARY KIDS! THEY ARE SO CUTE AND WONDERFUL AND DO SUCH FUN THINGS!". We both have nice kids around us. We're lucky girls!
I LOVE the new Hartman's! I used to hate going there so much becuase well, after Rideau Loblaws, pretty much all grocery stores are a huge step down. But the produce is so much better now and they have so much bread deliciousness! It's wonderful, except that there are poor birds trapped inside and when I hear them chirp it makes me want to climb up to the ceiling and rescue them.
And also, how exciting about them getting a "Natural Value" section! I worry that it will translate into me supporting them and their evil corporation rather than Herb & Spice, but sometimes I just don't feel like walking those extra two blocks to get soy parmesan or tempeh or toothpaste or whatever. Sorry, Herb and Spice :(
I haven't left yet (fingers crossed to be done and gone hopefully by the middle of next month) but even just thought is enough to do me in. I'm absolutly ridiculous about it. I'm homesick before I've even left the house. My father thinks it's a lovely idea to play "Salt Water Joys" whenever I'm within ear shot. It's going to completely different to be on the mainland where there isn't ... water to the left of me, water to the right of me, water all around me kind of thing.
heh I've gone and done it again now. Thank you. (Really!) I like knowing that there are others who think/feel the same.
Hey, no apologies! I like babbling! I like hearing stories! I like knowing that other people can identify with my sentimentality!
I had no idea you were thinking of leaving! Where would you move to?
And don't worry, I was totally like that (homesick before I even left) too. I think it pretty much happens to everyone, so don't worry about it. Even though I have my supermarket moments, it's otherwise not so bad! The anticipation of how homesick I thought I'd be was way worse than the actual homesickness itself, and I think that's the case for a lot of people.
