but at least i didn't do a jig....alkalize_or_dieFebruary 13 2005, 09:53:23 UTC
while we're talking about maritime memories.... i was at a verrrrry krowded pub last nite, and the band of kourse struck up 'mary mac.' .....and apparently i know all the words?!?!!? all my friends were tongue tied and kouldn't keep up with that effing stupid song, but i guess years of unwilling subjugation to Great Big Sea has left the ability to sing along to sea shanties indelibly stamped on my being??? i was like the sea shanty superstar last nite, everyone was so impressed, but i was absolutely bewildered! who knew.

You are ALWAYS the sea shanty superstar, and don't you forget it! Some time I want to witness this rendition of "Mary Mac" though! Avec jig, SVP!!
I also find that I've subconsciously learned a whole bunch of annoying Maritime songs, and I can't figure out how I know them! My best guess is that it's from years and years of girl guides? Or maybe music class? I don't know? I've never been tested at a pub, but when I was listening to the Burns Day stuff on CBC radio, I pretty much knew the words to every single song?
I didn't realize how much I missed the ocean until I went back home for Christmas after moving to Saskatoon. I miss that ocean smell a lot. As for the fish smell, I don't really associate that with Vancouver so much as I do with my Korean heritage. But yes. I want to soak up as much ocean air and sit in the sand for hours on end when I go home. I think I miss the mountains just as much, but that's probably just because I'm on the prairies.
I'm afraid to ever visit the West coast because I fear that the combination of ocean and mountains and nice weather would mean I would hide out there forever and ever! Being away from all of that lovely scenery must be so hard. I mean, not that the prairies aren't also lovely, but in my mind, very few things can compete with salty air and ocean water!
Do you find visits back home are enough? They used to be for me, but over time it seems to be getting worse.
