Yeah, yeah, yeah, so camp preparation has totally consumed my life and it's all I can talk about and it's all ambient noise. But despite that, please help me! Musically ( Read more... )

the child in me pretty much adores jonathan richman, just be careful which song you would select for delecate ears.

maybe something like the violent femmes, the unicorns, or brian wilson / the beach boys.

then again I'm certain most children hate me.

The delicate ears thing keeps haunting me! Even things that I would without thinking assume to be perfect and totally inoffensive (Belle & Sebastian, Of Montreal, Magnetic Fields...) are so problematic. How did I go all these years without catching all the heteronormativity, vague references to drug use and eating disorders, etc.?!

But anyway, back to business- these are all awesome suggestions! There will be ample amounts of Brian Wilson!

Maybe you could make a few mix CDs with appropriate songs from the bands you thought would be ok. That way you can expose them to the right messages without any sacrifices in terms of sound quality.

for boys
jason anderson
dismemberment plan
rainer maria
my bloody valentine

random ideas but i could see some songs being loved by younger generations. i left out most indie pop stuff because you said you had it covered.

Randomness is totally welcomed- I want them to have access to as many different genres and artists as possible! MBV is such a good idea for the boys!

Also, while I do feel like I have the indie pop bases covered, feel welcome to suggest even more things- especially if you can think of anything that has G-rated references to homosexuality!

The Go! Team's "Thunder, Lightning, Strike." Very upbeat and fun. It's got a lot of schoolyard "hand-clap game songs" themes to parts of it too, so the kiddies can relate. ;)

Geez, how did I forget about that album? The hand clapping is going to be perfect!

... mostly because then I can force them to teach me all the hand clapping games I was "too cool" to learn when I was that age. Everyone wins!

My only fear would be that they'll love it so much that I'll have to listen to on repeat. Every day. For a week.

Though, I guess if that happens the CD can "accidentally" fall in the lake!

OH OH I SECOND JONATHAN RICHMAN! Teach the children to look for a girl they care about and don't just "wanna bone"/anti drug messages!
ALSO! malkmus! jenny and the ess dog, and that entire album. So many historical alusions! and pirates!

But what if I play Malkmus and all I can do is dreamily think about how much I am in love with him??

I'm being totally serious :(

At soccer-baseball someone asked me who he was (on the grounds of my shirt) and I was like "UM, ONLY THE HOTTEST MAN LIVING OR DEAD" and proceeded to go on for ten minutes about how hot his nose / grasp of the English language is.

Guhhhh.
