Some Decemberists songs are pretty theatrical--so they deal with less troubling "modern day inappropriateness" without being totally tame or dull. Some definitely have sexual content that would be inappropriate, but you could probably find some that the kids would like to listen to.

That's very true! I think I could definitely manouever my way around it by picking a few selected songs. Your mixed CD idea above was a very good one!

nada surf, death cab for cutie, aislers set, the be good tanyas, stompin' tom, the beatles, yo la tengo etc. you have to screen some of the songs though! i'm not sure what kids are listening to today or even what's appropriate! happy listening and camping!

I think pretty much anything is appropriate if there aren't references to God/Jesus, heterosexism, racism, misogyny, or any of that stuff. Or I mean, if there are really obvious references to drug use or violence or other questionable things, then that can be dicey too. But beyond that, pretty much anything goes!

I totally forgot about the Aislers Set, and think they'd be perfecct! All your ideas are really great. Thank you so much for the help!

One of my professors made me an "accessible / political hiphop" mixed CD for them, and she put some old black eyed peas on it! I was listening to the CD last night and thought to myself "they are going to lovvvve this!". Great suggestion!!

Really? I always think of Saint Germain as such "shopping in Chapters" music! But I trust that you, of anyone, know your stuff in this department!
