Yeah, yeah, yeah, so camp preparation has totally consumed my life and it's all I can talk about and it's all ambient noise. But despite that, please help me! Musically ( Read more... )

If you're going for something a little more vintage, there's nothing more suitable for moody teenagers than the Smiths. Lots of gender/sexuality-related lyrics, with jangly guitars to boot. Also, Elvis Costello, especially circa "My Aim is True".

At the beginning of my quest I was convinced that I was going to make them listen to the B52s and the Smiths all week, but I quickly changed my tune.

Like you said, moody teenagers would no doubt totally fall in love with the Smiths, but my concern is that the younger kids will be all "BORINGGGGG". Maybe the key is to select the more upbeat Smiths songs, lure them in with those, and then come in for the attack with the mopey-er songs!

Oh man, I really hate to bring you down, but you can't really force 10 year olds into liking anything but pop music. Having spent 2 summers as a counselor to 11 year olds, it's really difficult. You could, though, become "friends" with the cool kid and then they would, by sheer coolness, bring everybody into the awesome music circle.

However, I would recommend true oldies music. To some, 80's music is just lame, but classics, like the Beach Boys, are pretty good. (My mind is drawing a blank on other "oldies" artists/groups, but I know that you could probably think of some others if necessary.

I may not have commented on this before, but if you have any general kid questions/counselor questions, I've been a camp counselor for 3 years now. I totally lived with 11 year olds for 3 weeks at a time. However, I know your camp is pretty specialized, and I'm not entirely sure how different the culture between Canada and the US might be, but hey! I like to help people.

Good luck with the music quest.

There is no convincing me that I cannot influence the tastes of these kids! Kids are so enthusiastic about new things at that age that I really think there's a great opportunity for them to become exposed to, and learn to love, a whole bunch of new things. Growing up, camp was always one of the places where I felt most willing to make a leap of faith and try out new things- be it a new kind of food, or a new activity. So I really want to take advantage of that ( ... )

Seriously, I'm glad that you're so enthusiastic (spelling?) about music. Because, really, it's your attitude that makes all the difference ( ... )

I'm doing.... also nervous! I wasn't too bad until this weekend when I realized how much I have to get done before I go, so now I'm a bit of a ball of stress! Definitely in the same boat as you with the buying things. And oh, god, the laundry. You reminded me that I keep putting off the laundry!

The kids are going to LOVE all that percussion stuff so much. The tambourines!!

Despite the nerves, I hope you're doing well. I'm sure everything will come together, whether or not we do our laundry or not. Hee. Good luck at your show tonight!!
