CHAPTER 15 - "Fall"
2 weeks have passed. JaeJoong kept his promise on not seeing or speaking to either YunHo or ChangMin. Everything was too hard to bear. He didn’t expect things to go the way it did. He didn’t think that ChangMin would turn to violence. He thought YunHo would stop the fighting and be mature. JaeJoong really screwed things up.
“Are you okay?” YooChun asked, very concerned over his best friend.
“…no…I’m not. I don’t know what to do now, YooChun-ah…”
YooChun sat down beside JaeJoong and patted him on the back.
“I don’t know what to say to you to cheer you up except that JunSu thought there was a spider on his bed so he ran butt-naked to my room.”
“Pffft…hahaha!” JaeJoong laughed.
“See? Now there’s the smile I haven’t seen in a while.”
JaeJoong remained smiling, “Thanks, YooChun-ah.”
“No problem.”
“I need help. I can’t figure out what my next move should be…”
“Well, what do you really want?”
JaeJoong pondered on it. What did he want? Did he want to get back together with ChangMin, so he’d stop feeling guilty over his cheating? Did he just want to reconcile with ChangMin but stay friends and risk his heart to love YunHo?
“I-I…I can’t decide…”
“Are you still scared that your heart will break?”
“…” JaeJoong stayed silent.
YooChun sighed, “I’ve read somewhere that when you think of one person every day, it means that person is significant to your life. Just think about who’s in your heart… you’ll know what to do.” YooChun smiled and said, “I have to go. My class starts in 20 minutes. I’ll see you later.”
“Yeah… I’ll see you.”
YooChun left the dorm room and JaeJoong was alone once again. JaeJoong needed to sink deep into his heart, if he was going to risk it or not.
“YunHo-yah, aren’t you hungry?” Bo Hana asked from outside YunHo’s door, which was locked, “You’ve been inside your room since you came home. Are you sure you don’t-“
“I’m fine, mom…” YunHo exclaimed.
“O-Okay. There’s dinner in the refrigerator if you feel like eating.” She received no response.
The poor single mother was worried sick about her baby boy. YunHo’s been upset for the past 2 weeks. Did something happen to him? She was overly concerned.
‘Maybe I should call JaeJoong… he’ll know what to do.’
“Huh? You want me to…what?” JaeJoong sounded very confused over the phone.
“I’m sorry, JaeJoong-ah. YunHo’s been so upset lately. He doesn’t eat or sleep. His grades are slowly slipping again. I need your help,” replied YunHo’s mother.
Of course JaeJoong couldn’t tell YunHo’s mother that the reason for YunHo’s behavior was because of him. She might fire him or worse, cut him out of YunHo’s life for good.
“Eomoni, I-I have to sit this one out.”
“Why?” she whined.
“We-well, I have class a-and…”
“Please, JaeJoong? I really need your help…”
JaeJoong sighed and gave in to her request, “Okay. I-I’ll talk to YunHo.”
Bo Hana, “Oh thank you! Thank you so much, JaeJoong! I’m sure YunHo will feel much better after he talks to you.”
‘…or feel worse,’ JaeJoong continued in his head. “I’ll be on my way.” He hung up his cellphone and took in a deep breath. He wasn’t sure if he was ready to face YunHo. He skipped out on tutoring YunHo for 2 weeks and made an excuse that it was his finals. Bo Hana took the lie. JaeJoong thought he was off the hook and could ignore YunHo altogether but this had to happen.
YunHo was just as affected as he was. Maybe…JaeJoong was a bit too harsh with his words? Maybe JaeJoong shouldn’t have cut off ties with YunHo.
“I really did mess things up… good job, Kim JaeJoong,” he heaved a heavy sigh then got up from the sofa. He placed his hand on his chest, feeling his beating heart. He closed his eyes and the first person he saw was-“Yunho…” His heart beat faster, he felt like he was going to have a heart attack. His palm was sweating and shaking. No doubt, he’s in love.
“I messed it up, I’m fixing it.”
JaeJoong was greatly determined to fix what he broke. There was no way he was going to lose YunHo. He’s in love with him.
JaeJoong quickly grabbed his jacket, put on his shoes, grabbed the keys and closed the door. He was speeding down the hallway, down the stairs and outside the dorm building. He ran to the bus stop until-
“Oomf-“
He bumped into someone.
JaeJoong raised his head and apologized, “I’m sorry.” Only did he realize it was ChangMin.
“Ch-ChangMin-ah…” the awkward feeling returned.
“Hyung…” ChangMin managed to utter out.
“Y-You’re calling me ‘hyung’…why? You could just call me JaeJoo-“
“Hyung, I need to tell you something.”
JaeJoong was taken aback.
“O-Okay, sure…uh…wh-what is it?”
ChangMin took JaeJoong’s hand, brushed his thumb on JaeJoong’s palm. JaeJoong looked around; a few people saw them and watched them from afar.
“Ch-ChangMin-ah, there are people watching-“
“I don’t care, Hyung. Just listen.”
JaeJoong shut his mouth and looked straight at ChangMin.
“Hyung, I love you. You know that I’ve never loved anyone more than I’ve loved you ever since I met you.”
“…ChangMin-ah…”
“That’s why… I’m willing to let you go.”
“What?” JaeJoong expected ChangMin to be against JaeJoong liking YunHo-what is this shocking turn of events?
“I know you don’t love me.”
“…”
“You love your student. I have no idea what you see in him. Truthfully, I’m really bitter that you chose a brat over me.”
“…Chang-“
“Let me finish. I love you, but that doesn’t mean your heart belongs to me. I could pray to God to make you love me…but even God cannot grant this for me. He knows you belong with someone else…and I respect that.”
JaeJoong smiled and hugged his friend, “You’re great, ChangMin. Don’t forget it.”
ChangMin also beamed, returning the hug given to him by wrapping his arms around JaeJoong’s waist.
“I don’t regret loving you though, Hyung.”
“I don’t regret being in a relationship with you, ChangMin-ah.”
“I’m glad. Oh…as a final request, can I be a bad person and ask for something from you?”
“What is it?” JaeJoong pulled back from the hug.
“Can I kiss you one last time?”
JaeJoong’s eyes widened, stunned from such a request. He could see the hopefulness in ChangMin’s eyes. They were sparkling in anticipation. JaeJoong complied and leaned forward for one last kiss. It wouldn’t hurt. Their lips touched; it was an innocent peck. It lasted for a few seconds, people saw, they didn’t care. It was a kiss between friends now.
ChangMin was the first to release from their kiss and hug.
“Thanks, Hyung,” he smiled.
JaeJoong didn’t reply but just smiled back.
The bus’ door opened, ready to take in new passengers at the bus stop.
“You were one your way out, right? You’re gonna see the brat?” ChangMin asked.
JaeJoong simply nodded.
ChangMin took a step to the right, “I don’t want to be in your way.”
JaeJoong grinned and gave ChangMin one last, tight hug before running inside the bus. JaeJoong couldn’t be more thankful for having a dongsaeng like ChangMin. He was lucky to have him in his life. Now, the problem was to finally tell YunHo-he was going to risk it all.
YunHo didn’t want to believe that what he was seeing was real. He couldn’t have felt lonelier in his life. He could hear the thunder roar in his head. Right in front of YunHo’s eyes was JaeJoong hugging ChangMin across the street. YunHo gritted his teeth.
YunHo traveled to JaeJoong’s dorm in order to talk to him, ask for forgiveness for being immature with ChangMin. But he didn’t expect to see JaeJoong with ChangMin.
‘They do go to the same school…of course they’ll see each other. What if-they’ve seen each other the past 2 weeks?’ YunHo didn’t want to believe what he was thinking…but it was surely possible.
He continued to watch from afar. JaeJoong wasn’t saying anything. It seemed as though ChangMin was doing all the talking. Then, YunHo’s heart dropped down to the floor.
JaeJoong…kissed ChangMin.
“No…” YunHo murmured.
YunHo turned around. He didn’t want to see anymore.
“They’re…back together, aren’t they?” YunHo softly asked to himself. He wanted to doubt that they were together again…but still, the ache in his heart made him think it was that way. He walked down the street, his head held low. He felt so numb, so lost.
His hands were in fists. He tried to contain himself, his feelings. But nothing could stop the tears fall from his eyes.
