I already loved the scene in the bath and it gets better and better. Although I would have 'placed' the flashback at the point when Marcus got into bed. I kept wondering how long Marcus was just standing there staring into space. Are we going to see Esca's POV next?

Thank you so much! Ha ha, you know, when I started out on this chapter, I did have the flashback exactly there (are you psychic???) but moved it because I wanted it to be clear why Marcus would be so emphatic about rejecting the expectation that Esca should share his bed. And I'll be sticking with Marcus's POV in this story, to keep it in line with the book and film POV (and to attempt to maintain some of that inscrutability Esca has). BUT, there are other standalone scenes/stories that I'm planning on writing from Esca's POV in the future ;)

I wish I was psychic. ;) When I had posted the comment, I thought some more about the flashback. It makes more sense that Marcus would remember the slave the moment he sees Esca in his bed. And to remember it all probably took two seconds.

I love stories that commit to one POV.

I am so thrilled to see an update to this!

Gah I don't think there are words for how much I love this story, the characterization and the writing. I feel like I'm glimpsing a little bit more of Marcus' soul with every line you write. I really liked that we got some backstory on him in this chapter (god that scene with the slave boy broke my heart) and all the detail you put into this. This fic is so good. So good.
