Computer question

Apr 17, 2004 13:44

The fan is out on my computer. My brother told me to turn it off until I can replace the fan so I don't wreck the computer.

I have a small fan that I could hook up and blow into the back of the computer. Does anyone know it it will work? I really don't want to be offline for a couple months. He hasn't gotten back to me on it.

Anyone?

Hmmm don't know. But it seems logical. =0( I would miss you if you were gone for 2 months or more. Ouch! I hope there is a way to get around that.

I was told replacing the fan would run me into the hundreds, with labor. Since that is not the only thing wrong with the computer (crashing, no sound etc). I may as well put my money into a new computer rather than keep trying to save this one.

no I don't think that will work -- the fan has to blow out of your computer

I was going to say the same thing. The only way you could work around it would be if you actually had an A/C trained straight on the computer.

Fan should not run you that much. No more than 50-100 and thye aren't that hard to install in most cases. And if the fan is broken, that might be the major problem becuase your computer si overheating causing it to mess up. But yes the fan blows out of the computer and the fans in computeers often run at several times the rpm of othr fans, so no that wont work.

50-100 dollars will take me a few months to save. Then to have to do it myself. Youch.

According to "the husband" who was a computer tech in the navy, if you take the case off the computer (if it's an upright), and blow air from a fan through it, and if the ambient room temp isn't too hot, you may be able to run it without it crashing from the heat. He says it's possible to keep the cover off for prolonged periods as long as the environment isn't too dusty, because there are no exposed moving parts ( ... )

I was going to suggest this too. We've run computers for weeks like this with no problem. Another thing, if you can find a local kid who will replace the fan, they sell them pretty cheap at places like Microcenter and Fry's (not sure what's near you). Or you can do it yourself, just remember how you got it out, take it in and get a replacement, and put it back in. Not too hard, just kinda scary if you've never done it before.

What?!? Not hundreds!!! azrieltook April 17 2004, 19:55:27 UTC
If it's just a simple case fan you can buy one for less than $10 and pop it in youself! That's what I did! I got 2 and put one in front and one in back so it makes the air pass through.

So long as it's not the fan on the power supply (that's a different story), you'll have no worries! :) Good luck.

It is the one in the back. I am going to call a computer store for a quote.
