Title: If I lay here
Fandom: Final Fantasy X
Characters: Yuna, Rikku
Prompt: 070 Storm
Word Count: 504
Rating: G
Summary:  Rikku lies out in the storm with Yuna, because Yuna feels lost.
I wrote this in March as a sequel to Not Alone, but never posted it (as far as I can see). I think I couldn't decide which prompt to categorise it as. In any case, it makes sense on its own.  I think it was inspired by Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol.

If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world?

Forget what we’re told before we get too old.  Show me a garden that’s bursting into life.

All that I am, all that I ever was, is here in your perfect eyes; they’re all I can see.

I walk towards the edge of the waves, my feet leaving silent imprints in the wet sand.  The wind whips through me, blowing my hair away from my face.  Thunder crashes and I wonder if Rikku is hiding inside from the lightning.

I throw my arms out and my head back, watching the stars flicker as bolts of lightning flash down from the sky.  As the rain soaks through my clothes, I search the sky for a reason for why I’m here.  My life doesn’t really have a purpose anymore - Sin is gone, and the man I love is gone too.  I’m like the thunder - I get a dramatic reception wherever I go but in reality I don’t do anything.

“Why am I here?” I whisper to the sky, but the storm drowns out my voice.  The lightning continues, thunder rolls overhead and the rain keeps on coming.  I feel small, and ineffective, and pointless.

“Who am I?”  I wonder.  Then I turn round as someone takes my hand, and see Rikku.

“You’re Yunie,” she tells me softly.  The sounds of the storm should cover her voice, but somehow I can still here.  “You’re Yunie,” she repeats.  I stare into her eyes - the classic eyes of the Al Bhed - and understand.  Getting caught up in the clouds is easy, but unwrapping yourself from them is harder.  It’s easier to forget the simple things in life - like knowing that people love you - than to remember that people’s love for you is why you need to be here.

I lie down on the sand, the waves breaking over my feet, and watch as Rikku looks up at the lightning-filled sky and bites her lip.  I wonder if she’ll go back to the village now, or whether she’ll stay here with me.

I stare up at the sky, watching the stars sparkle through the gap in the clouds as I run my outstretched fingers through the sand.  The infinity of the stars makes me feel hollow inside - but somehow it’s a good emptiness, the emptiness you feel when you forget the world.  Then Rikku’s smaller hand takes hold of mine and I remember that she is my world.

I look over at her, and see that she is staring up into the heart of the storm, defiantly watching the lightning flash above her.  Her grip on my hand is loose; she’s entranced by the dancing patterns made by the bolts of light as she loses herself in the storm.  I’m suddenly reminded that we all have problems that one day we have to face.  Everyone needs someone to hold them while they cry and it’s my turn to do the holding.
