 A year ago today I had good feeling as I left my house to go meet someone.  In the past year, I've lost my mountain scent, had a few setbacks, and even shaved my beard but the good feeling never left.  Not in murky canyon twilights or on the landfill mornings. In fact, one thing has become quite apparent:

Our carpool stopped at a hotel in Chandler to pick up the last person. She put her stuff in the rear of the vehicle, got in, picking up the driver's purse, asking:

Lately, each day starts with the long walk up and into the mountains. I don't step quickly but I move at a fast pace. Firm footing comes from gentle stepping, pace is a function of breathing. The last time I remember sitting in this particular spot was a year ago in the midst of a soggy winter -- watching the bottoms of winter storm clouds rolling down the canyon, snagging on rocky peaks. Thinking of something I had written a few days before, something I wrote not to share, instead just wanting it out of my head:

04:30 found me in a way I least expected; awake, but not in my own bed. Instead I was on the bottom bunk of the kids' bunk bed, on top of the blankets on the rock hard pillow on the thin mattress buttressed by wooden slats. The kids are of course asleep in my bed. Symmetry, it's all about symmetry.
