It's true, being a Music Director is on the list of rather thankless jobs. Lawyers, Police, Lexicographers, Garbage Men and Musicians who play during Operas and Ballets are high up there, too.
But dear God, that they displayed that kind of insensitivity to a physical ailment of yours is absolutely revolting. I'm sure you could make a discrimination suit over this if you felt like pursuing it.
But at any rate, you must be sure to let me know what pieces you've been Director of, so that i can at least support you by purchasing a disc, and I will hope that things change for the better, very soon.
Thank you for the kind words... It's just really frustrating with all this bullshit. There are other instances too, like Tuesday, when I had the barbershop quartet for the show called from 12-1, and Tech rehearsal started at 1. Someone was taking orders to go pick up food from the deli down the street.. I said to the director (the one taking orders), "Can you pick something up for me?" He said, "No, the theatre is buying lunch for the quartet since they worked through their lunch break." So what the hell did I do? They were called to work WITH ME, so I could help them learn their fucking music better. I worked through my lunch too. Big difference was this: I came in at 9 that morning to have an orchestra rehearsal that went til noon, so I really didn't get a lunch break. The quartet? Their first call of the day was noon, so they could have eaten lunch at 11:30 before coming in
