I counter the potted plant effect as much as possible by doing household chores while I watch. Folding laundry to Mythbusters is relaxing somewhat.

That's a good idea, and I wish more people would do stuff like that.

I still think it's passive entertainment, and should be done in moderation, opting for active entertainment when possible.
