Sometimes I feel like writing fan letters/notes/e-mails, etc., but I have this fear of seeming strange or creepy. Plus, some people (as you mentioned) might not even hear it themselves. Some people who do directly get fan praise probably just blow it off.

Sometimes when I comment on things like blogs and videos, they turn into fainmail.
Once place I've sent a fan email to was to Mugglecast (popular HP podcast) and it was for their segment "Chicken Soup." For the segment, listeners send in a piece of fanmail/fanstory that would get read on the show. Its a cool feature that they do to encourage listeners to send in their experiences/thoughts on the show.
