Shaving is much easier with old-fashioned shaving soap. There is no cream or gel that does as well. It yields comfortable results even for people like me who shave like twice in three weeks. A brush yields better lather, but isn't totally necessary.

(as an extra added bonus, a cake of shaving soap is <$1 and lasts months)
