Oh, another thing that makes ciphers a lot harder is messing with vowels. If you leave the vowels out, especially if there are no word breaks, you may be making it impossible to figure out a specific translation. There's also using fonts/languages which make vowels punctuation-type marks above or below letters (which are all consonants, or unpronounced) -- like hebrew does in real life. With one like that, though, any kind of spot or stain on the paper can really screw people up. I've had fun with one like that, but it was hella hard.
