Those of you who are bored by heraldica should probably skip today's post.

So I've been trying, honestly trying, to update the Pictorial Dictionary so that every period charge includes a date, a family name, and a citation. I keep discovering charges I thought I'd covered, going back and re-doing. Given the Absolute and Utter hell my life has ( Read more... )

The SCA accepted a narwhale from me---but a narwhale is a real animal that was known in period, although not at all common as a heraldic charge.

Actually, back when I was in possession of the Coral files, I was reading some of the Caid CoH meeting minutes from the '80s... and ISTR a comment to the effect of "well, we can't find evidence for the enfield in period, but beasties made up of parts from real animals were period, so this should be considered peri-oid"... I don't have access to that stuff anymore, of course.

--Marion, who is now introducing the phrase "'Bruce said so' is not sufficient documentation!!" to the Northshield College of Heralds... the first time I said it here, someone answered, "What?! But..."
