In pursuit of the enfield

Those of you who are bored by heraldica should probably skip today's post.

So I've been trying, honestly trying, to update the Pictorial Dictionary so that every period charge includes a date, a family name, and a citation. I keep discovering charges I thought I'd covered, going back and re-doing. Given the Absolute and Utter hell my life has ( Read more... )

Go you! (See how relatively un-awed I am--it's from being there the last time you dazzled Professional Heralds (TM).)

Not bizarre at all! Having gotten a copy of that one article for you, I'm now quite intrigued by the whole enfield saga at all, and to get both (a) a response from Garter, and (b) an admission that your research might have been better than his is pretty awesome.

A few years back when I was researching mail armor, I ran across a hauberk made of gold rings that supposedly belonged to St. Wenceslaus. The period the hauberk was from and the particulars of its construction had not a lot in common with when Wenceslaus was alive, so I wrote to the author asking for more information. "Yeah, that probably isn't right," is a loose translation of the response I got.

Mind you, this doesn't hold a candle to writing to Garter about disputing much more obscure heraldic research, but ain't it cool when we can go "huh?" and the pros have to 'take it back?'

I'm sorry about the hell that has been life lately. I'm glad you're taking some time with projects you've wanted to get back to.
