I've identified my main objection to the iPad. I acknowledge that it's an utterly cool bit of software and hardware, and if one were to materialize in front of me now, absolutely free, I wouldn't say no to it. But my objection to the iPad can be summarized in a single sentence: It's not made to create.

I completely agree with you. I use my iPad to consume data, not to create it.

I'm hoping the Android or WebOS tablets will be more useful in the creation of data. I haven't had a chance to get my hands on one yet to try it yet, though.

I suspect all these tablet devices are going to have the same problem as the iPad: they're designed for consuming, as you put it, not for creating. So no iPad or equivalent for me any time soon.

Good review! I was thinking of getting an IPad but this makes me think I need to think about it a little longer.

It's a question of what you want with it. JP uses his for Netflix, and he's totally happy with it. If that's what you want one for, you'll be happy too. Me, I want something I can use.

Methinks that is what the iPad and all the forthcoming Android tablets are designed to do. They were all originally operating systems designed for mobile phones which are designed to communicate and receive data.

I think when Jobs and Ballmer make tablets from their main computer operating systems you will be able to have software that will allow you to create on a tablet.

Excellent point. I finally went for a NookColor, which is the same functionality for half the price.

Not quite the same functionality: a Nook is an ebook reader, and not much more. I concede the iPad does a lot more... but not what I want to do.

The original Nook web browser is a very simplified thing, but the NookColor does have a full graphic web browser. I surf on it all the time. The only thing it doesn't have at the moment is apps, and they're working to try and add those. Still can't write on it, though.

Well, there's a second reason to decline the iPad: even if you could create content, how could you get it out? Email it to yourself as an attachment?! Please.
