Internet freedom: Still staying with LJ. And recent anti-piracy campaign

Aug 18, 2012 15:30

Upon considering it all again and again, I decided that I will stay with LJ! These are hard times for the freedom of Internet: there were some news that Russian government might suddenly decide to block LJ completely (for Russia)! I decided to stay with it till the end ( Read more... )

Audible...*grrrrrrrrr* It's SO annoying. I got some ASOIAF-audiobooks from there but the format doesn't work on my cheap MP3-player and I haven't yet found a way to convert them to MP3s, that does not need hours. Which is a shame, really as they have great audiobooks at great prices :/

Yes, I have the exactly same problem! I haven't managed to find any good converters too. ** sigh ** If you find any - please let me know. As you say, it is a shame because their collection is quite good.

Oh yes, THAT IS TOO BAD A WELL. I think it is all due to copyright laws somehow, but really, people, we are living in a global world, it is time to adjust the laws!

iTunes? Boo :D

It all feels like a bit of a conspiracy to me though - witchhunts and all. Why no-one doing anything? Well, not everyone - some of TV companies are doing good things with streaming, but music? Books? Why not have an experimental website with prices lowered and see how this will hit the piracy? The answer is in the statistics in the link I posted, methinks. Online piracy in just 15% of all pirated stuff and most likely TPB don't really care about online distribution. It is just another way to increase control, that is all!

I will check bookdepository. I really need to find the best way to get audiobooks legally (I don't like to download books ), even though this seems to be a pain.

PS; Sorry for ranting. I hope you are well!

But...it still doesn't make sense to me? As long as the artist get their copyrights fee for each song/album downloaded, what does it matter from which country it comes from? Sure, every country has different laws, but still ( ... )

It’s truly baffling how they keep fighting! I think there are a few things that need reminding:

There’s no going back in time. Internet will only continue to change how people use different media; video, audio and text and how news and ideas are spread globally.

They need to think globally - people won’t wait half an eternally for a product to be sold to their country, if it is at all. If products are country-locked people will find a way to get it anyway.

Accessibility - things needs to be easy and simple to find, to download, to convert. Products cannot be locked in one medium or to one player/gadget. People need the choice to choose what is best for them.

When sites are shut down others will pop up.

Companies and governments need to start moving along with the current and not against it.

audible is the devil. i sometimes buy books there if I want to support the author, but then I usually end up getting them elsewhere too, so I donot have to deal with their crap...

I'm sticking with LJ. I like the community of people I know here and it's simple and easy - and free if you want. They make mistakes, but sadly I haven't found a single service that hasn't made some horrible mistake at some point. At this point, I have a foolish hope that LJ has got them out of their system. There is also the issue of the various other services having particular niches that don't meld with what LJ does for me at the moment.

Don't get me started on the whole war on piracy rubbish. I have yet to work out why Kindle editions are available for some books in one country and not in another even when they have the same bloody publisher in both.
