pissed off

Lili told me last night of an incident in which her teacher grabbed her face and shook her head back and forth because of a math problem that Lili did incorrectly (she answered it correctly, but didn't show her work). I am so incredibly pissed off about it and want to kick her teacher's ass. Lili said that she is not the only one this has happened ( Read more... )

that's so fucked up. I'm really glad you took action to stop it and I hope the principal acts appropriately.

We are supposed to have a meeting with the teacher so she can apologize to Lili, but I don't know what to do after that. Shawn, Lili's mom and I all agree that we do not want her back in that classroom, but we're not sure of the alternatives. We were planning on moving Lili to a different school next year (one 5 blocks from our house) so that's an option, but I don't know if I want her to leave all her friends in the middle of the year, it might be too much, too fast. The other option is to move her to the other 3rd grade classroom, but that seems to me like it would be really embarrassing for her to have to explain why she switched classes and also to have to be around the old teacher all the time.

This coming week is mid-winter break so we have a little time to think about it. I think on Monday I am going to call the new school and see if we can meet with the principal and maybe introduce Lili to the 3rd grade teachers and see if she wants to switch.

So the principal got back to me right away Friday morning, both emailing me and calling me. She apologized for the incident and said that the teacher was out sick but that she would be calling her to discuss. I find it interesting that the teacher is out sick because so is Lili. What if she got Lili sick from touching her face?!?!

Another thing she said has be kind of concerned, too. She was talking about how some teacher choose to "stand on a positive pedestal" and others, unfortunately, choose the negative route. And she understood that this was one of the teacher's weaknesses. She also said that she was sure that the teacher would be very remorseful because when they had discussed this in the past she was. IN THE PAST?!?! Has this happened before? Why is she still teaching?!?!

WTFWTF??? in the past bullshit... that's NO EXCUSE!! and YES... why is
she still a teacher... I would take it up with a local parents group to
dicuss what action YOU can take as a parent.

I will do a little research on this end to, but something like the CPS
and some kind of teachers association would be very helpful in letting
them know of the situation.

I would also, not threaten the principle, she seems like she is a nice person, but confront ehr again and let her know she will NOT be the
only one who knows about this if the teacher has had a history of this
type of tratment and is STILL in the school system!

this is not right, as a teacher , I know she could get in a LOT of trouble for putting her hands on a child. There are also child advocates who could help you out there!

children have INCREDIBLE rights protecting them.

I will see what I can find but you shoudl ALSO do some research

good luck my friend

I called a friend of mine who also has a daughter in Lili's class to let her know what's up and also because Lili had told me that this girl also receives a lot of verbal abuse. This ia another thing with this teacher, she yells at the kids a lot. I understand that you have to be strict sometimes but I think she goes about it in the wrong way, it's more belittling rather than instructing. Lili's 2nd grade teacher was really strict but in a way that the kids respected and he was never mean about it ( ... )
