I use the phrase "discursive but thematic" and wish to transplant satire.

Tonight was a weird night to tune into The Good Wife. I don't watch the show, but something big went down and I was like WHOA, that's big ( Read more... )

In the US, "satire is what closes Saturday night." The truth? We can't take the TRUTH.

I just watched the end of Nurse Jackie S5, that was intense. S6 starts in a couple of weeks.

We can't understand satire, because we aren't born with the satire gland.

Nurse Jackie - I can only imagine how intense that is!

Although one could argue that Jackie is the world's most giant Mary Sue, because she has an ex-husband! a really nice boyfriend! an ex-boyfriend who still likes her despite her shabby behavior! and two female BFFs, one of whom is in love with her. But Edie Falco sells it.

Yes, and yet still a fucked-up mess. You'd think she'd count her blessings, but I suppose that's what addiction does. If that's still the central plot thread.

True Detective blew my mind. Very satisfying. And Hannibal delights me right down to my toes in every single episode (although I am pleased that Will has been given slightly more agency in S2).

As for the porn talk, you are right - that guy is a little distracting. I feel as though I have FAILED at watching this vid because I spent at least 50% of my time objectifying the hell out of him. He's also construing porn consumption very narrowly (male viewership, heterosexual content, only discusses one medium), but perhaps this is the only way to attack such a large issue. Since I do not consume video pornography (although I consume porn in other mediums), I can intellectually nod my head with his argument but find that everyday body objectification has been far more damaging to my life. Advertising, mainstream tv & movies, media dialogs, and politics all contribute to ripping emotional and cerebral ties from attraction and sexual desire far more effectively than porn, and we are LITERALLY swimming in that soup every waking moment of our

YES! Exactly. And not in the context of two people enjoying it. But I certainly have clicked by the "regular" porn to get to the stuff I like, and it is definitely not female-positive. It's some pretty degrading shit. Makes sense why so many straight men can't DO SEX properly, too. They think it's all about banging. Um, dude, it's not. I'm not a door. Don't bang me.

A hot guy talking about sex, about his hands on a woman, about hugging, kissing, relishing... UNF. I wonder if that was part of it - - certainly wouldn't be as much of a message if it came from a not-hot dude!

I used to work in a bookstore when I was younger (skinnier and horribly single) and, yes, we sold porn mags at the shop. It didn't bother me (or that porn mag customers got all crazy-horse-eyes on me when I cashed them out) - the mags were pretty tame stuff and I've figured that you do what you have to when you're human and alone, ya know? But one day I was stocking the ENTIRE magazine section and realized that EVERYTHING was telling me who I should be/how I should look/what to do in order to bag a man. I couldn't look anywhere and not receive a sexualized message of womanhood. And I was soooooo alone, yo... It was a really depressing shakabuka moment for me that I've never forgotten. I just felt like everything was stacked against my success as a smart, attractive person who just happened to possess a vagina. Now, how does a naive 14 year old girl raised on the internet and a culture of instant gratification even have that dialog with herself? Let alone fight against it ( ... )

I haven't seen the clip yet because my life is so fucked up I can't budget 15 minutes for a TED Talk, but I think that makers of commercial porn are just in it for the money, so they follow viewers' wishes rather than creating them. I think it's more that commercial porn reflects how common misogyny is among viewers, it doesn't cause it. Also, there are a lot of teenagers who shouldn't be trusted with a live partner, everybody's a lot better off if they stay home with their Internet connection.

I tend to have a Darwin Award view--i.e., anyone who thinks porn is a sex education documentary, like anyone who thinks that The Fast and the Furious is Driver's Ed, does not belong in the gene pool.
