study shows that muscular people don't burn calories any better/faster than fat people, etc.

Diet, Exercise Take Off Equal Pounds, Study Finds:

(confirmation of what you probably already know:)  They found there is no way to selectively lose belly fat, for instance, or trim thighs. And their carefully controlled study added to evidence that adding muscle mass does not somehow boost metabolism and help dieters ( Read more... )

Well I already knew that 'spot-reducing' exercises were shit, so that's no surprise. IE: I went from having size 4 waist + size 6 thighs (in jeans, I mean) to having a size 0 waist and 2 thighs when I last lost a lot of weight. Overall size decreased, of course, but not the proportions.

And as far as muscular people not losing more weight... I'm a little disappointed to read that, I suppose. But at the same time, glad, because I'm not particularly muscular myself. And I have a tendency to diet heavy with only minimal exercise.

"If anything, highly trained people are highly efficient, so they burn fewer calories at rest," Ravussin said.
That I had never considered. But duh, it DOES seem to make SENSE!

yeah, i am not surprised by the spot-reducing part. but i feel like the part about muscular people not having higher metabolism / not burning more kcals at rest is weird... and would be contradicted by my former personal trainer. i mean, i know that the smaller you are, the fewer kcals you need to consume to maintain your weight but i still thought the higher muscular composition was advantageous in the calorie-burning dept.; and that notion is definitely propogated by the bulk of companies marketing fitness in some way or another...

so i dunno. but even the lead researcher in THIS study admitted that there are health benefits to exercising regularly / being fit! so there. haha.

I mean, everyone in my LIFE has told me that muscles=higher metabolism! I guess that's why I'm so interested in this claim.

I can't believe that higher % of muscle mass doesn't equal higher metabolism. If you have 2 people who weigh the same but one is more muscular and the other has more weight from fat then I bet anything the person with more muscle bulk will have a higher metabolism. Muscle is very metabolically active tissue and fat is much less active as it is just a store really! Hmmm.
Maybe I'll ask one of my lecturers......
