It took a while for Becker to come to.  The last thing he remembered was dinner.  Since asking for a divorce, he’d preferred to eat alone, the strained atmosphere that accompanied every meal causing him to lose his appetite.  It was hard having to live with his wife until they’d made alternative arrangements, but at least they’d managed to remain ( Read more... )

My husband saw that Sharon Osbourne clip and didn't stop ranting about it for days. The whole thing's pretty shocking.

You're right. It's terrible that society as a whole has such a hard time accepting violence against men.

It was fictional, but last week's episode of "Private Practice" explored just that - I don't know if you watch the show, but one of the storylines was about a man who had been raped by his commanding officer. Everyone's first reaction was "Why didn't he fight back?" which of course we would never say had it been a woman.

Very well written as usual!

You know what's really sad, though? People DO say that about women. All the time. Enough so that it's hard to prosecute a rape case unless the woman was dressed plainly, in a well-lit place, sober, employed, white, and attacked by a violent black stranger with a weapon. Most rape cases are plea-bargained, and attorneys know to try to have men on a rape jury. Why not women? Because women jurors want to blame the victim so that they can believe it won't happen to them because they won't act or dress "like that ( ... )

The problem is that woman-on-man violence and woman-on-children abuse is swept under the carpet, brushed aside, that there is an attitude that if it happens to a man, he should just harden up, he wasn't being man enough, or, in this case, he deserved it because he had a penis and penises are funnier than breasts. Stating that violence aimed towards men tends to be either between equals or criminals ignores the reality of what goes on out there - and also ignores the fact that the proportion of female child abusers is far greater than is recognised or acknowledged - and who has greater control over food and shelter than a mother? Certainly of my parents, my father was emotionally abusive, but my mother was the one who would pick up my brother and throw him against a wall or beat me with a stick. The nature of abuse may vary among the genders but abuse is abuse, whichever way you cut it ( ... )

I haven't watched that show for ages, but it sounds like it would have been a really interesting episode. Just goes to show that victim blaming hits across the board.
