It took a while for Becker to come to.  The last thing he remembered was dinner.  Since asking for a divorce, he’d preferred to eat alone, the strained atmosphere that accompanied every meal causing him to lose his appetite.  It was hard having to live with his wife until they’d made alternative arrangements, but at least they’d managed to remain ( Read more... )

Violence against another is never a solution to a wrong. I think the reason for special interest groups is to promote awareness and focus fund-raising efforts.

Two wrongs never make a right. You certainly don't deserve to be treated like this just because you want to end a relationship, even if you're really bad at breaking up with someone.

wow, not enough sad words to convey how awful that this was based on true events. D:

I wouldn't normally do a commentary after a story, but this time I felt it was warranted - it's truly horrendous.

I actually remember reading about this online when it came up this summer. It got quite a bit of buzz.

I don't know how I could have missed this when it happened, to be honest.

Yikes. She should definitely be in prison. There is no cause for what she did.

I agree with notodette, though, that calls to action for abused women and children are still vital. Yes, it does happen to men, too, though the numbers are far lower than what occurs. The amount of domestic violence and rape toward women, as well as toward children, is staggering compared to that which happens toward men. All human beings should be protected, but sometimes the separation of causes needs to occur to draw attention to violence that remains so prevalent.

You might want to check out the links I posted in reply to Whipchick above - there's a lot more violence against men than people realise but the support available is disproportionately low (7,500 shelter places for women vs 60 for men in Wales and England). Separating out the causes has resulted in taking attention AWAY from violence - and there are far, far more female child abusers than people realise, precisely because it's assumed that men are always the aggressor (in fact, in domestic violence cases, men and women are roughly equal in terms of who starts it; the problem is that since men tend to be stronger, they are usually the ones to finish it).

That's what worries me here - in a bid to create an equal society we are, ironically, discriminating against a minority and leaving a whole section of society without support or acknowledgement. That's something which has got to change.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. My son is only a toddler, but I've already told him that he deserves to be treated with kindness and love.
