Thank you. It was initially going to be a lot simpler with the point being that even her mother had turned on her and thought she was possessed, but then I hit upon the idea of the escape plan and it all fell into place from that.

Ouch. On the one hand, she acted horribly, betraying her friend; but on the other hand, you do have to credit her with finding a way to escape the abuse. It makes me think about all the young women living under similar situations in our country, whether or not religion is involved.

I think that's the thing - although what Rachel did is awful, she's a product of her upbringing and you would develop an element of Ruthlessness (ha! See what I did there?) under those circumstances.

It isn't, but it was inspired by a recent case of exorcism abuse in the UK.
