In My Wheelhouse

All I ever wanted was to be a mum, to hold my own baby in my arms, smell its soft, newborn smell, shower its head with kisses, cuddle it from dawn ‘til dusk.  When I got pregnant with Tara, I can’t describe how happy I was to see those little blue lines.  Everyone said that I was a natural mother and when I fell pregnant with Tilly when Tara was ( Read more... )

Thanks! I joked with a friend that I was going to write about vampires emigrating this week and this is how it ended up.

I started reading and was like "ok, this is interesting". Then hit the "when teeth bit into flesh..." and was like "ok, this is awesome". Great hook, with an unassuming start to the piece. I appreciate surprises very much. :P

Thanks - I really wanted to keep the vampire aspect subtle and underplayed so that it was a gradual build rather than a BAM! in your face thing.

Very engaging fiction. I guessed te vampire theme when..teeth bit into flesh.. but I did not expect that she would WANT to turn her own daughters. (In Twilight Edward was so protective with Bella.)

I haven't read Twilight, but from what I've heard, it's not really representative of vampire mythology in general. I must admit that one of the things I find most interesting about vampires is just how much humanity remains once they've gone and what exactly happens to the human person - every canon is slightly different on that front. I had originally planned on having her stay around for a little while until the urge to feed on her children drove her away, but it's an Idol post - I could have made this so much longer if I'd let myself.

Hopefully, you will get an opportunity to just write more of it. It was really good.
Although I initially identified vampire=Edward from Twilight, I have read a lot of other renditions of vampire stories or other movies and there are always different attributes, cultures, etc.

Have you read Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake books? Although they eventually descend into nothing but soft porn, the first ten or so are really good. VERY different to Twilight!
