Pukeko Problems

Jun 01, 2007 12:02

The pukekos who look on our paddocks and back garden as their special habitat are beginning to be a bit of a nuisance. They pinched most of our feijoas - it was not an unusual sight to see a pukeko dashing past with fruit speared on its beak - and I didn't get any feijoa and lemon jam made this season. Grrr ( Read more... )

What a bizarre but colorful bird! Their legs/feet look almost like they're too big for their bodies! And how the heck do you say their names?? SURELY it's puke-ko, which is the first thing that popped in my head! LOL!!

And your fruit looks good, too -- does it taste similar to anything I'd be familiar with?

Maori has spanish vowels: ah, eh, ee, oh, oo

So it's poo-keh-koh.

Feijoas are originally from Brazil, but we don't pronounce those properly. *grin* Fee-joe-uh

Erm, they're definitely an acquired taste. Most people who haven't grown up with them can't stand them. You scoop the innards out with the spoon, but you don't need to add sugar like you would with a tamarillo. (If you know what one of those is!) We usually have feijoa crumble for pudding/desert, or you can make feijoa cake from a banana cake recipe and substitute 3 feijoas for each banana. however, mostly you just eat them raw.

So that chook really was trying to come in two weeks ago. I swear, it even wiped its feet on the doormat...

Tim still doesn't believe that the thing was trying to eat me. And Gwen thought it looked tasty and wondered why I didn't fry it.

I love feijoas (never thought about their English spelling before, hm) but I can't recall seeing them anywhere around here. I only recently started seeing kiwis (I only recently realized I had to look for them in the Chinese markets. Duh! *headdesks*). I'm not sure if they have them here, kinda like pomellos. :( I miss my exotic fruits. :((

The pukeko is beautiful, even though I can agree that he would be somewhat of a pain in the butt. :(
