Thirty-one years ago today, my mother gave birth to my best friend. Of course, at the time--having been an only child for five years--I wasn't so terribly keen on the squalling, bald thing she brought home, but I grew to like her once I realized she really wasn't going anywhere. We have lived in this house for a year and two months. In that time, we haven't really made many improvements.
