oh, sarah, im so sorry to hear about your cat.
Ive had to go through that too. my cat attemped to jump on my bed one morning, (she was 20) and she didnt make it, and fell on her leg, and she broke it, and the vet said tehre was nothing they could do to make the pain go away, or to help her at all, cept to put her to sleep. i felt like it was my fault too.
