I like your idea of the "fair-weather fan." Though, I don't think that it is necessarily a bad thing to be one. If consumers did not pick and choose the best car option for them (horsepower, fuel-efficient, compact, etc.) then the Big Three would never have seen the errors they were making.

To be quite honest, I think that the old Chapter 11 may be the best option for them. It is unfortunate that it had to come to this drastic of measures, but if everyone just bought American cars then the Big Three would never have realized that their cars are out of date.

Don't get me wrong, I love my American-made cars and you would not catch me dead in a Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc. I don't think the quality of the American-made car is any less that a foreign-made car, they are simply not as snazzy or fuel-efficient, etc.

I would much rather buy an American-made car over any other...if it looked nice, drove smoothly, etc ( ... )

Well, while I do like American cars I don't have anything against a non-American made one.

Hun, i think your choice of "not catch me dead" in a non-American car is a little extreme. Those are really good, efficient, dependable and very NICE cars (Lexus anyone?). It's just a matter of opinion...I LOVE my Jeep and wouldn't trade it, but I am sure others LOVE their cars too regardless of brand.

I am just not quite sold on bailing everyone out. That was the point of my above response to your initial post.
