So I was researching internships for the summer today and I found a rather promising group at the Getty. It's close to home and even involves ancient art. How awesome! I read on, the stipend is pretty good and I'm qualified if not overqualified. This is totally gonna make my day ( Read more... )

Are women considered an underrepresented group? There seem to be more male docents than female. Art historians, even. The only one I can think of is....Sister Wendy.

Nope. This one is purely a "multicultural" thing.

Sorry chick, but I don't think they're wrong in using their internship program to draw specific people into their field, people they want to see more of. Internships are education-based; you get experience, they get free labor. The goals for both sides are different than they would be in a "real job."

Now, does it say they outright won't consider you, or will they give preference to the groups they're looking for?

It's the only undergraduate internship program they offer and they state that is its specifically for students of certain ethnic groups. It is also the only paid internship program that I can find in LA and at by far the most prestigious organization in that field. And they wont even consider me because I am white. If it were that they set aside a certain number of internship positions that would be one thing, but this is flat out cutting me off from the only opportunity of the sort that I can find without leaving the city. How is that right in any sense of the word?

Generally paid internships are very sparse on the ground, as I'm sure you know by now. I think most organizations think of them more like scholarships than employment opportunities-and they might not be subject to the same rules.

It sucks, but sadly, that's adult life for you. I will assure you, most of the time when you get rejected for a position it's for even stupider reasons than your ethnic group. You can make a stink about it and make a moral point; or you can get over it, move on, and look for something else. If the organization's choice of who they want to help annoys you so much, you probably won't be happy being there anyway since their opinions differ so much from yours.
