Blake's 7 / Swallows and Amazons (all)

Dec 01, 2007 13:18

I've been so busy this week, I've only had the chance to write this today. It's the Blake's 7 characters on Gauda Prime done with much of the plot and--I hope--the style of Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. His character Roger is so like Vila, I couldn't resist. If you don't know the books, just think 30s British children's adventure story.

I've never read Swallows and Amazons, but your version sounds jolly already--and it plausibly gives Dayna a lead role and lots of interesting things to do. (Which is more than I ever managed.)

She's the only one who'd know how to sail. Ransome wrote two kick-arse girls with his Amazons (the ruthless Nancy is wonderful), but I do have to make up for Susan who spends all her time being the cook and stand-in mother, especially to Roger (the Vila-like character). Dayna will not be doing that, but she's probably also the only one who knows how to gut a fish and cook it.

No practical experience, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if Avon beguiled some of those long night watches by reading up on "The Book of Dangerous Boltholes for Boys."

LOL! And of course he will be Captain Avon, even if he can't sail (yet). Because he's the oldest, of course.

Hee! I never knew that I needed this crossover to make my life complete, but now it seems so obvious!

"Sheets?" asked Vila from the doorway. "That thing looks too small to sleep on."

*hearts Vila*

And jolly hockey sticks Dayna is perfect for Ransome.

And Tarrant will make a good Titty (well, he's a bit of one anyway) because I've always suspected him of being the romantic and dashing hero of his own interior adventure story. :-)

You want more crack? How about my Molesworth/B7 page?

I am trying not to read B7 fic until I rewatch it (last seen in the 80s), but I feel my resolve weakening day by day...

But, but, but... I liked dreamy Titty...

I became a fan in 2001, and I've started rewatching again three months ago, an ep a week. I've been rereading all the S&A books this year too and I was very struck by Roger's Vilaness.

I like Titty too (she's so like me), though Roger and Nancy are actually my favourites. I was just making a mean joke about Tarrant's titness, but he'll be much more likeable in this. After all, Titty was fond of Roger; they all were.

Wow, and you haven't even read Swallows and Amazons! I've been rereading them all this year and they're so well--and wittily-- written. Nancy (whose equivalent hasn't appeared yet) is one of the best female characters in children's book: tough, intelligent, and a natural leader.

I'm going to have so much fun writing this.

I love it! Haven't read a Ransome for ages, but I think there's a few around here somewhere :)

Thank you!

I've been rereading them this year (I've had to buy most of them) and they're deservedly classics. So clever, funny, and believable with complicated and strong characters; Greg and I are really enjoying them.

It's amazing how Dayna comes into herself when she's given something to do (actually, she reminds me a tiny bit of Calvin's dad here, dragging the whole family off on camping trips and trying to fry fish in the pouring rain). This is going to be such a nostalgic romp, I can't wait!

I managed to fix my posting problem by leaving the comm and then joining again. When in doubt, reboot...

I'm going to so enjoy writing it! Will you Britpick for me? :-)

I was going to suggest doing that, but I couldn't see any logical reason for it working. I'm glad it has.

I would love to Britpick for you! Can I make it all 1940s middle class Britspeak? Can Avon call Vila a "fathead"?

Cool, thanks! I'm going for the words they used in S&A so he can call Vila a donkey or a duffer or an owl (though the last one puzzles me rather). I can't remember 'fathead' being used. If it sounds 30s British children's story to you and I haven't slipped in any modern, US, or NZ slang, that'll be fine. :-)
