"Dirty Wedding"

Jul 22, 2005 23:05

For quite some time, I have been wanting to share this short, yet poignant piece from Denis Johnson's book "Jesus' Son" (also made into a film that, as usual, excluded much of the better parts of the stories) that I find very much painfully familiar a line of thought. Initially, I was only going to post the first paragraph, but upon re-reading it ( Read more... )

Jesus' Son is a fantastic book. I'm sick of the drug lit. schtick. But, other than William T. Vollman, I can't think of anyone in a similar niche who can touch the voice Johnson weilds in this one.

Hey, you? What's up in your life?

I haven't read that book, but you've got me curious. I've been reading whatever I can find by Italo Calvino and Karel Capek, two of the greatest writers of the 20th century. So many writers, so little time!

Seriously, I'll check out that book. You're a good writer yourself, and I trust your opinion. I'm always looking for good books to read at work, where I read while waiting for sand and rock to dry. This is almost a dream job. I spend half of my work days reading! Damn!

Heh. I just realized that my Subject Line serves as a reference to you personally, as well as merely the silly phrase that jumped into my mind when deciding to post this reply. *low stoned-sounding voice* "Dude...That's, like, SO heavy, man, like, duuude."

Anyway, as far as your first inquiry, I'll have to get back to you on that one, as there is really way too much to divulge at the moment. However, it's ironic that you posted when you did, as just yesterday, for whatever reasons, my mom and I were talking and you somehow became the subject matter for a brief moment of our conversation. Before moving on, I actually mentioned to her that I had thought of calling you sometime in the near future. Should you actually care to know the answer to your question, why don't you be a doll and e-mail me your phone number? I know that you gave it to me some time ago after you posted that you would feel "weird" calling me for some reason (which, by the way, I'm still unsure exactly why that is, but...*shrugs*). Anyway, I don't know whether the ( ... )

"Book him, Dan-O!" Heh! I just finished reading Nightmare Town, a group of short stories by Dashiell Hammett, the greatest crime/detective novelist of all time, in my opinion. That could have been one of his titles. "Book him. He's guilty as sin!"

"way too much to divulge at the moment"

Okay, you're not dulling my curiosity, mystery woman! Are you a CIA operative? Have you been "outed" by Karl Rove, like Valerie Plame? Fess up!

Just kidding, of course.

Okay, "dream job" is a severe exaggeration. My dream job would have nothing to do with concrete. It would have more to do with lounging around all day, occasionally getting up to play piano and/or watch movies.

I'll send you my e-mail address and phone number.

Tah-Tah!
