I haven't seen Elementary (and I'm not planning to) but from what I've deduced (badum tsh) from t'interwebs, what you've said is my exact problem with it. Loads of people are going on and on about how you can't make John Watson into Joan Watson and basing much of their problems with the show on that particular piece of information. I don't give a crap if John is Joan now - as long as Lucy Liu acts well then that's fine by me; what I don't get is how this concept has anything to do with Sherlock Holmes. To me it sounds like the Mentalist. And I did read somewhere that the Mentalist was basically set up to be a US Sherlock Holmes.

Sherlock Holmes is as mich about the settings and paraphernalia of C19th London as it is about the character of Sherlock Holmes. One fo the reasons BBC Sherlock works is because the showrunners have an innate understanding of that. You can't just move Sherlock to New York. It is one of the few books/ideas/whatever where that shift in location really doesn't workI'm sad about how much this is a blatant jumping ( ... )

I tried watching Last Resort, and meh... I had hoped they'd be sneaking around in the submarine for a while, but that obviously wasn't going to happen, and then I had hoped that they'd end up completely stranded on an uninhabited island a la Lost, and that didn't even happen, and then there was just too much political/personal drama back in the USA going on to hold my interest. IDK, maybe it's a good show, but the content just isn't what I expected or what's interesting to me.

Elementary... I found it much more like the ACD stories than the BBC miniseries - Sherlock's drug use (he used both opium and cocaine quite liberally in the original), Captain Gregson, the beekeeping thing, and I think the Holmes/Watson dynamic was a little more like the original writings and a little less of the "Turn the homoeroticism up to 11" that we've seen in the more famous recent incarnations, especially the Guy Ritchie movies. Especially the beekeeping thing, as a fan of the originals that really made me smile ( ... )

I can't get behind the show, Elementary. I knew this and tried to watch the pilot and it still didn't change my mind. It doesn't do Sherlock Holmes justice.

Person of Interest makes me happy, and I love watching Reese, Carter and Fusco all kind of working together - particularly when Carter is calling Reese "John" while Fusco is just like, "the bane of my existence". LOL I know. "you two on a first name basis" and the whole Reese not acknowledging him as a friend was funny too.

I also love what they're doing with the Machine, making it almost its own character.
I rather enjoyed the training and interactions with the machine. That could just be the sci-fi nerd in me that loves that stuff but I do.

The dog, too was a wonderful touch and I really hope we see Bear again. John needs someone to keep him from being lonely while Finch isn't around.
He totally does and it's perfect for his personality type of being protective over others.
