[She sounds tired and worn here, but also firm.]

I agree, Professor. I was going to put up my own advice against it, but I see you have done so first.

[soft chuckle]

We can't have you doing everything, Hermione.

Harry and Ron certainly would let me... [And then she falls silent at the mention of Ron...]

You're probably right, but it's hard to dismiss....

...If nothing else, it would be prudent to wait and see what happens to those who do go through. I'm sure some won't be deterred.

Even realizing the endless dangers...no, they likely won't. But if it really does lead somewhere else and we remain behind, we might never find out what happened.

And what exactly is your proof to that?

That we're being manipulated? Only observation, Draco. Tom was taken fifty years ago - if the world were truly damaged as the letter claims, we'd surely have noticed by now.

Not necessarily. It obviously depends on what kind of damage they're actually implying.

If it's to the structure of reality itself, we certainly wouldn't notice right away - wouldn't know how - but after so much time, there must be some kind of effect we could see. And the damage would have been compounded when Narcissa and then Lily were taken.

[Her voice is wry, and maybe just a little sad.]

What would Mad-Eye say if we were gullible enough to fall for this?

[his tone is similar, but he tries to inject a bit of cheer] I think he might just hex us.

You might be right. Anyone silly enough to buy that letter...

More desperate that silly, I think. Still, you shouldn't let emotion overrule logic. [softly, through a sad smile] Constant vigilance.

I have to at least try.

And if it kills you, Harry? Permanently? [he's trying to keep his voice even, gentle, but a bit of distress does strain the words]

Hermione's notes said that's very hard to actually do here. Whether that's true about our world or not, it will be if I can't get back.

But not entirely. What if this is their way of trying it? What if you walk through that portal and simply cease to exist?
