I'm damaged

At least I'm changed.  I can't just read for the joy of reading and absorbing a story anymore.  And this is your fault, dear flist.  At least my old flisties, the crazy Potterites.  And those of you who pulled me into discussing the books over at the Quill.  I guess it can be said to be a long term side effect of Quilling.  *dramatic sigh*  What ( Read more... )

it might be the one that is called in english 'the winter book'. there is also, unsurprisingly, 'the summer book' which is in the same vein.

kiss goodbye to productivity, then. still, they are short books.

I don't think it's the 'winter book' as there is one 'vinter i mummidalen.' This is very much a bleak November and the family seem to have left.

Today has not been a productive day at all, in addition to moomin book there's been so much wind, and for some reason that knocks me out completely.

oh right, it's a moomin book, that would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moominvalley_in_November

i have a friend who has a shop and she is utterly obsessed with all things moomin, and sells them among all the witty urbane stuff.

There it is - and I do agree with Leona Wisoker that it's "a terrific mixture of keen psychological insight and Jansson's trademark humor."

I have a Moomin towel, and we have moomin cups, plates, bowls and trays... And reflex and pin. And kid's plates and cups and spoons. :-) The whole family on my mum's side have a moomin passion.

Lest I sound too professorial. I won't expound on the various types of reading. The trick is to find material that suits the time and place you are in. This sounds ideal for becoming aware of how to be a better writer but maybe not so good for reading while sitting on the beach-
The way in which she describes the people of her stories and their actions is nothing short of stunning. And I find myself not primarily sinking into the story, but being filled to the brim with admiration for the author.

You can choose.

LOL - be professorial all you like, Kate. But I usually experience books, and I like that. It's what I'm used to - and it's why I'm very picky about what I read. Being able to stay objective while reading is a very novel experience. This isn't anything I have any control over, because I've tried to be objective before and not managed, not at all. Unless it's very badly written. This otoh, is very well written, so it is a bit of a surprise.

I love Tove Jansson. I haven't read the book you're talking about, but I love the Moomins. Snufkin was my first ever idol when I was a kid. =D

And have you seen this "badass" rendition of Moomintroll and Snufkin? Amazing! XD

Also, the Groke scared the crap out of me. No lies. XD The Hattifattners were kind of creepy too, but not in a bad way, which is kind of hard to explain. Like, I knew they weren't sinister, but it was just that Moomin and the others didn't understand them. :)

Oh, yes. The Groke is definitely uber scary. But it's also fun to read about her now, and have you noticed how she's always pulled towards beauty and light? It's like she's longing for something...

I think of the hattifnatters whenever there's a thunderstorm! :-) Maybe I should have a barometer on a pole in the garden?

(Edited because I'm using the wrong icon - can't have that!)

The Groke is scary, but kind of sad too. I remember reading another book where the Groke turned up to a festival in Moominvalley. She wanted to warm herself at a fire, but just scared everyone away and snuffed out the fire when she sat on it. Poor Groke. Thingummy and Bob shouldn't have stolen the ruby from her. Not cool. :(

I remember the Moomins. I never read them (don't know why) but there was a stary-telling segment on TV where the Moomins were read regularly. There's a Moomin Valley?

That's a really interesting problem to have! I really need to get back into reading just to read, instead of internet stuffs, researching things, etc.
