I have to (well, want to) select a new primary provider for myself at our clinic. Mine seems to have left the practice at some point within the last couple of years. I'm uncertain, you see, because I haven't had an appointment with anyone but midwives (with the rare OB thrown into the mix when I've required higher level "procedures" [thanks for ( Read more... )

Whenever I switch clinics, I ask the receptionist/scheduler person about the doctors. I ask a little about their personalities, how people like them, stuff like that. I don't know if it's just a fluke, but I've found the two best physicians I've ever had this way. They were, coincidentally, women.

That's a good idea! You seem like the kind of person who can establish a positive rapport with pretty much anyone, though, and woldn't hesitate to drop a doc if they were jerk-ish or incompatible. I, on the other hand, have been known to tolerate a lot of ridiculousness like some kind of frightened rabbit :-P

I hate hate hate getting a new doctor. I have no great advice, as I got the last doc. I really liked by pure chance, and the doc. I have now because a nurse in Ravi's dept. knows her nurse and was able to get us in-- so we went in totally blind, but around here, it's really hard to get in anywhere and you take what you get. Oye. Healthcare sucks. Yes, I realize I'm saying that.

Oh, god. Sympathies. (I don't have an actual doctor, either.) I have done a little bit of poking around and, honestly? I've considered choosing one because they were, uh, full-figured. I f'ing hate going to the doctor because while I understand that it's part of their job to advise me that I'm a giant fatty (ha!) you know, it still makes me feel bad. And I wonder if ... like-bodied individuals might be more sympathetic.

Yeah. So, good luck.

Wow -- mind meld! I've had similar thoughts! Or I've speculated about whether the school(s) they attended were suitably liberal-seeming.

I have had great experiences with NPs when the kids have seen them (for last-minute appointments, etc.). I've thought about a PA-C, too. If I end up with some complex health issue, I'll just get referred to a specialist anyway. And there is one young MD who "enjoys travel, especially in developing countries" -- but I can't tell if that's code for missionary work ;-) Thanks for the ideas!

Wow. You know, I admire this. Whenever I need a doctor, I use my provider network directory and google maps. Whoever's closest wins!

Can't fault that method, though!

Most of the providers I have to choose from practice out of the clinic's main campus, which just happens to be the closest option, too.

I got hooked up with our (mine and Piper's) doc after hearing about him from Margaret. So, ask Margaret. ;)
