Coyote Howls

I was trying to sleep in a tent on a river once, and there was a pack in the distance. I thought they were dogs at first, but as the night went on, and after a girl described earlier in the night how crazy their howls could become, I realized that they were coyotes...and I have never in my life heard a sound like the ones that they began to make. They seriously sounded like aliens. There are no words to describe what my ears heard that night.

It has now been over ten years since I heard the howls, but I know exactly what you mean. One was outside the chicken coop, which was not more than 30 feet from the back porch from the farm house and let out a howl onto the evening gloom. The others answered from their posts in the accompanying fields. It was truly eerie. The cats left their window posts for the couch and I retreated from the back porch into the house.
