The only time I allow The Dog to ride shotgun is when we go down to the beach. The Dog has his own blanket, a ratty candy cane job from my old bed. He does not jump up into the passenger seat until after I've draped and smoothed it

This is great! Makes me think of me and my dog, although mine would not wait to get into the car until the blanket is straightened out. That, I know for a fact. :)

Mine didn't either at first. It took some training for him to realize that an open door doesn't necessarily mean "Jump right in!" When it comes to other open car doors though...
