You know, as long as the reward for good grades has been explained in the past, I think it will be okay. I totally hated my sis growing up, but if my parents did something nice for her cuz she came through on chores, it was understood. I didn't like that she was favored, but my parents were very clear as to why. Sibling rivalry will always exist, no matter what you may do to prevent it. But even so, there is always a protective thing going too. No matter how much I hated my sister, if I saw somebody being mean to her, I felt the need to step in or say something. Kind of a "she's my sister to abuse, not yours..."
Parenting has got to be tough. In most ways, I don't envy it, but it's got to be cool to see the successes to. Either way, your head's in the right place and i think you are wise to be worried about the implications of your actions.
Mariah is Cory's half sister. Jen & I didn't get married and she ended up getting pregnant again. The kids are three years apart. But all of us still do things together periodically. Jen has miniature horses that kids take to competitions. Mariah likes the obstacle & jumping, Cory likes driving. I come down the weekends they have competitions and help. We also take trips to Sea World, etc. You could almost call us an example of the modern unclear family. : )
But I see your point of not rewarding her only as a means not to make her feel left out.
