So this song has caused quite a bit of controversy in Australia as of late, with both of the potential prime ministers laying into comedians telling them to 'lift their game' and that 'it's not funny'. Someone mentioned to me it was the Donald Bradman quip that got Johnny pissed off... anyways, I'm not really sure it should've made election banter

Frankly, I loved the song. I thought that the over-the-top harsh lyrics perfectly illustrated the hysterical nature in which celebrities are glorified in their passing, and I appreciated the dark bitterness of it all.

Couldn't agree more, next time you do a stand-up gig do a rendition and end with 'even little Johnny'll be a top bloke when he carks it'... I wonder if that's the real chord that's been touched?

My 2c: I'm starting to get sick of all these pollies coming out with "you know, I love the Chaser's work, but this time they've attacked me, or someone I like, or think I could gain political capital out of, and therefore it's just not funny. Stick to the older stuff, guys." It's called the war on /everything/ for a reason, guys. Why should you or your friends be off-limits? In fact, if we want to get technical, the role of comedy in society *should be* to point out exactly this sort of thing -- things that need to be said, but are too sensitive to say straight, so we hide them behind a joke.

I guess the Aussie larrikin hasn't just been edited out of the "Becoming An Australian Citizen" propaganda, but is now being demonised on TV as well. Wait long enough, and our TV will be showing nothing more pointed than Seinfeld.

FWIW, I laughed right through it, I reckon it's Andrew's best song so far.
