The thing I'm liking least about L.A. is the fact that everybody always seems to be ON.  Meaning they like to talk incessantly about how great they are.  I can't tell you how many times a day, and from how many people, I hear statements that begin with "I'm really great at.....(fill in the blank)" followed by a long and laborious elaboration of ( Read more... )

There are also some really wonderful people here. But it sure seems like everyone markets themselves - constantly.

I've heard lots of complaints about these type of people, but have never had to deal with them myself. I suspect it has to do with "the industry" and all that. (But even people in LA who aren't in the industry are trying to get a foot in...I've met quite a few lawyers who write screenplays in their spare time!)

Oh, speaking of marketing yourself, I meant to tell you yesterday when you commented that you needed new, inexpensive clothes. If you want avantgarde LA fashion without breaking the bank, I highly suggest hitting sample sales. You can find clothes that retail for a few hundred dollars in the trendiest boutiques in Silverlake at sample sales for 50-80% off. DailyCandy.com usually puts out a sample sale listing every couple of months.

There were lots of things I liked about L.A., but the "slickness" wasn't one of them. There are some pretty nifty people there though...most of them from Atlanta. ;D

New York is a lot more "comfortable" to me, even though I seem to know a number of folks who really hate it.

"Comfort zones."

You're really great at listening to people tell you how great they are.

Don't you think it's less about marketing themselves, and more about insecurity? I mean, geez...it's LA. No matter how beautiful or smart or rich or accomplished you are, there will always be someone next to you in the elevator, or across the trendy diner, or passing you on the street, who's more beautiful, smart, rich, etc.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn these people are talking themselves up just to keep from falling into despair.

hee hee I don't even notice the people "being ON" over here; I guess I've made it a sport to always tune those people out.

Mind if I friend ya! I see that you have two pooches as do I. :)

Added. :) I've lived here too long. Came down for 4 years of UCLA in 1990...and aside from the 10 months I moved back up North to pay off credit card bills, I've been here ever since.

Yup, two labs. The 2nd one (11 weeks) we just got 1.5 weeks ago. Let me know if you find a good hiking club for dogs - that would be great!
