I am absolutely disgusted.
Justify it however you please,
but group attacking a mentally handicapped person is fucking sad.

Although annoying, try to put yourself in her shoes for just a minute.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone :(

P.S. - Just to clarify, this is in regards to a specific situation that I've seen very recentely on the chamberatlanta LJ community.

Heh, no.
Just an LJ community for a now defunct Atlanta nightclub.

A mentally handicapped, former patron of the club posted something completely harmless in the community that was of course unintelligible for the most part and quite a lot of people jumped all over her just for the hell of it.
Sad really.

just read thru the whole thing....or at least as much of it as is still posted.

Thank you Amy for having the balls and basic human decency required to take a stand on that. If i ever get to such a stagnant point in my life that my joy comes from pointing out the short-comings or others, or their problem areas (and not pointing them out in a constructive, helping them work on them way) then just shoot me and get it over with.

There are a lot of things people do for their (idea of) pleasure that I don't understand. On the reverse, I'm sure i do things people don't understand....guess i'll just have to lump this in w/ the shite that I (thankfully) just don't get.

Kudos to you Amy.

Well I am definitely not the nicest person in the world and I dont pretend to be.
I've made "retard" and "gimp" jokes just like everyone else and probably enjoyed them.
I'm not against stuff like that when it's basically harmless.
I definitely dont want to give the impression that I think myself a better person than everyone.
I can be pretty mean when I'm pissed at someone, but it's usually for a damn good reason.
Although I am usually portrayed by others (usually people who dont really know me or those who have deserved my wrath) as evil, I have always felt that the weaker creatures deserve our patience and mercy.

My 19 year old cousin is mildly retarded and when she writes to me, it looks very familiar to the gibberish written by danalyn78 so I guess the whole situation hit a little too close to home for me ( ... )

I'm not sure what her actual diagnosis is but she is definitely mildly retarded or brain damaged or something.

There was no hint that she had any kind of handicap besides generic stupidity. I even went to her journal to look for such clues before I posted anything and saw nothing. So, I had no idea. So, you actually know her?

I don't know her personally, but I remember her from the club.
She claims not to actually be retarded but she definitely has brain damage or some kind of mental handicap.
I thought it was pretty obvious by reading her post.
People used to mean to her at the club too, which is even more sad.
She was always pretty annoying from what I remember but in her condition she cant really help that.

Look, I am not even going to attempt to say that I am completely innocent. I love retard jokes as much as anybody... maybe even more; but there's a difference between making fun of the kid who says "This is my back", and what was posted and commented last night.

To see people get themselves over by attacking a girl who hasn't the ability to defend herself is wrong. Wow, you've totally overpowered a mentally disabled person with your intellect... how impressive! It upsets me to see people I know jump on that band wagon. We all have our own issues... how would you (and you know who you are) feel if someone exploited that publicly to make themselves feel superior.

It was almost like watching a National Geographic show with a group of fucking jackals attacking an already injured, smaller animal. Maybe you should think twice about what you're saying and to whom before you take cheap shots for entertainment.

It appears that most people weren't aware of her condition.

Yeah, I was having a hard time with the whole situation yesterday when I first saw it and I couldn't get to sleep last night until I finally posted something about it.

Not sure that it helped anything but it vented my rage a bit.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
Apparently most people didn't realize she had a problem or handicap or whatever though I guess.
Not to sound like an asshole but I thought it pretty obvious.
