I like that way of thinking about it. In a movie, you're surrounded by the sounds and sights being imposed on you, so you're in it for the moment--but in a book, it's what YOU bring to it that makes it live. Which tends to get into you in way that lasts.
I can see that -- plus, I think that reading is more of an interactive experience. When you watch something, you're just watching (even if you have an emotional response). When you're reading, you're not only 'watching' the story, you're also picturing it, feeling it, experiencing it with the main character. Your imagination is part of the process -- whereas you don't need much (if any) imagination to watch a movie.
Yes I believe that reading is way more interactive than any application of computers or videogames. You really build the world on the book in your mind.
I wonder if it is because we are writers/readers that we think this way, but I agree with you. Do actors feel differently? Can they read it in a book but not see it on a stage? Or on a screen?
Thank you Terri! I wonder the same. Although this friend who couldn't read the book of les miserables isn't a writer so maybe it happens to non writers too.
That is exactly why I prefer reading over watching a film. I love movies, love the the experience of it..the sights, the sounds, the music. All of those things are very enjoyable, but I think partly because I've been trained to appreciate it over time, having watched so many.
Reading is different. The world you enter through a book is so much more complete, because your imagination provides not just the sights and sounds, but the feeling, the taste of the air, the scents and currents. And because they come from within, and aren't a formulation of someone else's vision, you can't escape it so quickly, either.
